Conference „Reality Check for European Hydrogen Policy: Which Policy Fixes for a Clean and Competitive Future"

On 15 October, Business & Science Poland (BSP), together with the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP), organised an event in Brussels entitled “Reality Check for European Hydrogen Policy: Which Policy Fixes for a Clean and Competitive Future”.

During the event, invited speakers discussed how to shape an effective, technology-neutral approach that ensures hydrogen plays a key role in Europe’s energy future.

The event opened with two keynote speeches delivered by:

  • Lukas Wernert, Hydrogen Policy Lead, DG ENER, European Commission, who provided an overview of the EU’s progress in hydrogen development and its regulatory outlook.
  • François-Régis Mouton, Managing Director, IOGP Europe, who presented the industry’s perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing the EU hydrogen market.

Afterwards, the discussion was divided into two thematic panels:

  • EU hydrogen landscape from supply to demand: Shaping a technology-neutral framework for industrial hydrogen use.
  • How to accelerate and de-risk investments in hydrogen infrastructure.

The speakers included:

  • Maciej Ciszewski, Head of Unit, Diversification Strategy and Joint Purchasing, DG Energy, European Commission – responsible for the EU Energy and Raw Materials platform hosting the EU H2 Mechanism
  • Ivan Delibasic, Advocacy Executive Director, Hydrogen Europe
  • Maria Karagiannidou-Rosiek, Head of Policy Europe, IOGP Europe
  • Nicola Rega, Executive Director, Climate Change and Energy, Cefic
  • Monika Strzałkowska, Head of Hydrogen Projects, Economic and Business Analysis Team, ORLEN S.A.
  • Abel Enriquez, Director, ENNOH
  • Jakub Przyborowicz, Manager, GAZ-SYSTEM, TSO for Hydrogen
  • Piotr Kuś, Director General, ENTSO-G
  • Kamila Wacięga, Director for Energy & Infrastructure Policy, Hydrogen Europe
  • Witold Strzelecki, Managing Director, Business & Science Poland
  • Lucie Boost, Secretary General, Gas Infrastructure Europe

The discussions focused, on one hand, on the work carried out by the European Commission to streamline investments in hydrogen and to secure both supply and demand for decarbonised hydrogen through various tools, regulatory solutions, and funding mechanisms. On the other hand, representatives from various industries shared their concerns and challenges in getting hydrogen projects off the ground, as well as their proposed ways forward — including revising some of the currently binding legislation that hampers the wider uptake of hydrogen.
